This year marks the 2nd annual BGCA Give the Gift of a Great Future Holiday Campaign! Log onto the Boys & Girls Clubs of America website to learn more!
The Boys & Girls Club of America suggests that we as parents Give Your Kids the Gift of Giving. Do you do this at your house? These are my favorite tips they provide on how you can make this holiday season a season of giving at your house and for your children!
Talk about giving.
We talk about giving a lot at our house. We talk about how we can give people different things and how sometimes people just need our time. In talking about giving with our young children, we often ask them about wants and needs and how some people don’t even have their needs. Plus we also talk about helping people with their wants such as Christmas gifts for their kids and how we can help with that. The more you have these conversations, the more the children will get involved in them and prompt them on their own!
Volunteer together.
Our giving is generally our time or shopping for times. We strive to keep the kids involved in both of these activities. If we are baking cookies for the church hosted hot dinner, the kids help bake the cookies and put them into zipper bags. If we are shopping, especially for kids, the kids help pick out items to give to the kids and families and we have great conversations on wants and needs plus how gifts make us feel special.
Make philanthropy a family value.
When your child asks if they can share something they have or if we have money to buy extra items to share with someone they see or know, you know your conversations are paying off and they are developing a giving heart. This time of year, each time we walk in the store, I am asked for change so the kids can add to the kettle as they know it is going to help those in need. We love to hear their ideas on how we can help others and challenge ourselves to be enthusiastic about their ideas so they understand how great it is to come up with your own giving plans and projects!
Giving to the Great Future Holiday Campaign doesn’t even require a monetary donation on your part! Play the free Giving Game to easily donate a gift to a Club this season. You can give gifts such as plantable bookmark to grow flowers in the Spring or an art kit just by playing the game. I am sure we can each take a minute to play the game once but think about it if you trade in a few minutes of your Farmville time for an evening and play this game what you will give to the Boys & Girls Club of America!!
Plus take a second to vote in the Kids Give Back photo contest! Which picture makes you smile the most or just laugh a little? Give the pictures a look and a take time to vote for sure!
NOTE: I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Boys and Girls Clubs of America. I received a promotional item as a thank-you for participating.
