Recently, we posted about the importance of security software on your computer. To keep your computer safe, as well as all of the information contained in it, it is just as important to regularly back up your hard drive. Security software helps to protect against malware, hackers, etc., but by their very nature, they are always going to be one step behind. That software also doesn’t protect you from storms, floods, power outages or anything else that might destroy your computer. That’s why we jumped at the chance to review the Seagate Slim portable hard drive.
A few weeks ago, during one of the storms, we did everything right. We closed everything and shut down the computer. We didn’t think to unplug the cord from the surge protector (isn’t that what it is there for?). When we went down to reboot, the darned computer wouldn’t turn on. It was pretty scary to think about all that could have been lost. As it turns out, we were lucky that it was only the power supply that was fried. We had a local company install a new one and everything turned back on easily with no loss of information.
We were just so unsure about what could have been lost. Having to buy a new computer would have hurt the pocket book, but how many documents, pictures, programs, etc. would have been lost. In a day in which so many of our documents and memories are stored digitally, it’s a big deal to make sure that we have it all backed up. One way that many people back up this information is on CD’s or DVD’s. Unfortunately for us, our main computers have largely been laptops and the CD/DVD drives for our laptops have been notoriously short-lived.
That’s why we loved the opportunity to take a look at the Seagate Slim 500 GB Portable Hard Drive. It’s a USB-connected drive so it connect easily and it’s ridiculously small and compact. It’s smaller than my wallet!
