We all know that the economy is struggling. But with every dark cloud comes a silver lining. With housing prices down around the nation, it’s a great time to look at buying a home and options are open for many people who are willing to relocate. Before you start thinking about where to move, though, it helps to do a little research. Last year, Businessweek.com published The Best Places to Raise Your Kids. They teamed up with Bloomberg Rankings to evaluate thousands of towns around the nation. Scores were based on economy, schools, crime, air quality and other factors that would affect opportunities for your kids.
Interestingly, Blacksburg, VA topped that list. Beth and I met there when we were at Virginia Tech 13 years ago! It’s a great little town that is not fully centered around the campus. Sure the campus is the center of town, but it is very easy to get away from the campus. We both loved our time there and have often discussed moving back down to that area.
Once you decide where you want to live, you need to decide whether you will be renting or buying a home. With housing prices down, buying a home is a great option right now. You wind up with a safe place to raise your kids and you avoid the frustration of having to move year after year. While some adults can handle that well, many kids have trouble leaving friends behind and making new friends in a new place. Click below to learn about some options for owning your home.
