Winter has finally begun to rear its ugly head around Central Virginia. Every year, we wind up with the same problem, a freezing cold garage. Our old townhouse had a decent home garage door, so I have some idea of what to expect. I figure on the garage to be a little cooler than the inside of the house, but it really should not be the same temperature as the outside. I should not have to bundle up to run into the garage to get a gallon of milk from our spare fridge. Speaking of spare fridge, we have stuff freeze in there sometimes because the garage gets so cold. I would say that it is at least protected from the elements, but a strong rain will lead to a nice-sized puddle in the middle of the garage.
The problem is obvious. Our garage doors are nearly 20 years old. They have dents, old insulation, and the seals are torn. You can clearly see the great outdoors around just about any part of our doors. On top of that, the doors make horrible screeching sounds when opening and closing and our garage door openers are tenuous at best. You can see that we are in dire need of some new garage doors.
Unfortunately, with three kids, the budget for replacing these doors is non-existent. That’s why I’ve had to start learning about garage door repair. Tighten a hinge here, oil up a chain there, and I really need to see about replacing the seals.
Whether you find a service to repair or replace your doors or do it yourself, make sure that you do not neglect your garage doors. Their safety and your home’s energy savings are too important to overlook.
How are your garage doors looking? Leave us a comment and let us know.

my garage doors are looking…well nonexistant. I WISH we had a garage but all we have is a concrete pad where a garage once stood. 🙂
